Cochlear Implant Program (CIP)

Who is a candidate for a cochlear implant?

Adults
People over the age of 18 years with a severe to profound hearing loss in both ears, and who do not benefit from hearing aids are potential candidates for cochlear implantation. Patients must be post-lingually deafened. Other factors that determine candidacy are the cause of the hearing loss and commitment to follow-up care.

Children
Children who are 12 months and older with a profound hearing loss in both ears and who do not benefit from hearing aids are potential candidates for an implant. Other factors that determine candidacy are the cause of the hearing loss, the child’s educational placement and the family’s commitment to follow-up care.
